This is the best list of 187931 cities in the Russia available in 4 formats ( CSV, Json, SQL, XML ). We have cleaned up the Geoname database to leave only the towns, capitals and villages. All are all associated with regions and sub-regions (where available).
Each file contains the following data: Geoname_ID, City, Alternate_Name, Country_Code, Region, Sub_region, Latitude, Longitude, Elevation, Population, Timezone, Fcode_Name. See the FAQ below for a detailed explanation.
Here is an example of the data from the Russia file that you are going to retrieve. The data is displayed here in the form of a table:

Understanding Russia: A Geographical Perspective
Russia, the largest country in the world by land area, offers a diverse and multifaceted landscape that spans across Eastern Europe and northern Asia. Its vast size encompasses a wide range of environments, from the frozen tundra of Siberia to the temperate forests of the European part of the country. With such a varied geography, Russia presents a unique case study for geographers interested in the interactions between human settlements, natural resources, and climate. By examining the precise locations of cities, regions, and departments, one can uncover deeper insights into the complexities of Russian urbanization, resource management, and economic distribution.
The Geography of Russia: From Tundra to Mountains
Russia's immense land area stretches over 17 million square kilometers, covering approximately one-eighth of the Earth's inhabited land area. This vast expanse is characterized by dramatic contrasts, with some of the coldest regions in the world in Siberia, as well as temperate and even subtropical climates in the southern parts of the country. The geography of Russia includes expansive steppes, dense forests, vast mountain ranges, and significant bodies of water, including Lake Baikal, the deepest freshwater lake on the planet.
The Ural Mountains, which divide Europe and Asia, serve as one of the country's most significant geographical landmarks. These mountains, running from north to south, act as a natural divider and contribute to the varying climates and ecosystems found on either side. To the west of the Urals lies European Russia, which includes major cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg. This region experiences more moderate climates compared to the vast, harsh Siberian plains to the east.
Siberia itself, covering about 77% of Russia’s total land area, is home to some of the most extreme climatic conditions on Earth. While the region is sparsely populated due to its harsh winters and difficult terrain, it is rich in natural resources, such as oil, gas, and minerals, which have been central to Russia's economy. The Taiga, a dense forest that spans much of Siberia, and the vast expanses of tundra further complicate development in the region, although they are essential for Russia’s energy sector.
Regions and Cities: Russia’s Expansive Urban Landscape
Russia is divided into several administrative divisions, including oblasts (provinces), republics, krais, and autonomous okrugs. Each of these regions reflects the country's vast geographical diversity, and the administrative units often overlap with distinct cultural and geographical zones. The capital city, Moscow, located in the western part of the country, is the political, economic, and cultural heart of Russia. Moscow is a sprawling metropolis with a population exceeding 12 million and is situated on the Moskva River.
St. Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city, is located in the northwest near the Baltic Sea. Founded by Tsar Peter the Great in the 18th century, St. Petersburg has historically been Russia’s window to the West and serves as an important cultural hub with its rich history and architecture.
Beyond these two major cities, Russia is home to a wide range of urban centers, including Novosibirsk, the largest city in Siberia; Yekaterinburg, located in the Ural region; and Kazan, an important cultural and economic center in Tatarstan. While these cities serve as focal points of commerce, politics, and culture, much of the country remains rural, particularly in the expansive regions of Siberia, where settlements are scattered and sparsely populated.
The distribution of cities in Russia is heavily influenced by geography. Cities along the western borders are more densely populated and better connected to Europe, whereas cities in the east are often isolated due to the challenging terrain and climate. Access to natural resources, transportation routes, and proximity to critical infrastructure further shape the development of urban centers.
Latitude and Longitude: Mapping Russia’s Cities
Understanding the exact latitude and longitude coordinates of Russia’s cities and regions is crucial for mapping the country’s urbanization patterns, resource distribution, and geopolitical significance. The latitude and longitude of major cities like Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Vladivostok offer insights into their relationship with their surrounding environments, including proximity to key geographical features such as rivers, mountain ranges, and natural resource deposits.
For example, Moscow, located at 55.7558° N, 37.6173° E, serves as a political and cultural nexus in Russia, influencing the economy and governance of the entire country. St. Petersburg, situated at 59.9343° N, 30.3351° E, is a gateway to the Baltic Sea and plays a significant role in Russia’s maritime and trade activities. In contrast, cities in Siberia, such as Novosibirsk, located at 55.0084° N, 82.9357° E, offer key insights into the economic importance of resource extraction and transportation routes that connect the eastern part of the country to the rest of Russia and the world.
Mapping Russia’s cities and their geographic coordinates provides valuable data for urban planners, researchers, and policymakers. It helps to understand regional connectivity, the movement of goods, and how urbanization patterns correlate with geographic features. This data is essential for analyzing the logistics of Russia’s transportation networks, from railways to pipelines, which play a vital role in maintaining the country’s large-scale economy.
Unlocking the Power of Geospatial Data for Russia’s Future
Access to precise geographical data is essential for understanding Russia’s urban and regional dynamics. By obtaining detailed data on the cities, regions, and coordinates of Russia, planners, researchers, and decision-makers can gain deeper insights into the country’s spatial structure. Such data enables effective regional planning, resource management, and the identification of areas requiring infrastructure development or environmental protection.
Geospatial data is particularly important in regions with sparse populations and challenging environments, such as Siberia. By knowing the precise coordinates of cities and towns, it is possible to enhance logistics, transportation networks, and the distribution of essential services like healthcare and education. Additionally, it aids in the development of policies to address climate change, manage natural resources, and mitigate natural disasters, which are particularly important in areas prone to extreme weather conditions, such as flooding or wildfires.
Furthermore, understanding the location of cities in relation to Russia’s natural resources, including oil, gas, and minerals, allows for more efficient management and sustainable development. By leveraging geospatial data, Russia can make more informed decisions about how to balance industrial growth with environmental conservation, ensuring that its vast natural wealth is managed responsibly.
Conclusion
Russia’s geography, spanning vast territories from Europe to Asia, offers a diverse and complex backdrop for understanding the interplay between urbanization, economic development, and the environment. By examining the precise coordinates of its cities and regions, one can gain deeper insights into how geography shapes the distribution of resources, the development of infrastructure, and the movement of people across the country. Access to accurate geospatial data on Russia’s cities and regions is essential for planning a sustainable future, supporting the country’s growth while protecting its natural landscapes and resources.
