Nepal cities list with latitude and longitude in CSV,SQL,XML,JSON formats
Last update : 15 January 2025.
This is the best list of 7907 cities in the Nepal available in 4 formats ( CSV, Json, SQL, XML ). We have cleaned up the Geoname database to leave only the towns, capitals and villages. All are all associated with regions and sub-regions (where available).
Each file contains the following data: Geoname_ID, City, Alternate_Name, Country_Code, Region, Sub_region, Latitude, Longitude, Elevation, Population, Timezone, Fcode_Name. See the FAQ below for a detailed explanation.
Here is an example of the data from the Nepal file that you are going to retrieve. The data is displayed here in the form of a table:

Nepal: A Geographical Insight into the Roof of the World
A Country of Mountains, Valleys, and Plains
Nestled in the heart of the Himalayas, Nepal is a landlocked country that offers one of the most diverse and stunning geographies in the world. Despite being relatively small in size, Nepal's topography is defined by dramatic elevation changes, ranging from the low-lying Terai plains in the south to the towering peaks of the Himalayas in the north, including Mount Everest, the highest point on Earth.
The country's geography not only shapes its natural beauty but also influences its climate, culture, and human settlements. The southern plains, often referred to as the Terai, are fertile and support agriculture, while the hilly and mountainous regions to the north have a more rugged landscape, where communities have adapted to life in higher altitudes. This geographic variety plays a crucial role in how people live, what resources they rely on, and how the country has developed its infrastructure.
Understanding Nepal's geography requires more than just an appreciation of its stunning landscapes—it involves examining how cities and settlements are distributed across the country and how different regions have developed in response to the challenges and opportunities presented by their environments. By obtaining detailed geographic data on the cities of Nepal, including their regions, departments, and geographic coordinates, one can gain valuable insights into the nation's spatial organization and development patterns.
Regions and Urban Settlements: Exploring Nepal’s Diverse Landscape
Nepal is divided into seven provinces, which are further subdivided into districts and municipalities. Each of these provinces and their associated districts has distinct geographic and cultural characteristics that influence both human activity and economic development. The provinces range from the flat, agricultural plains in the south to the steep, mountainous terrain in the north, where the Himalayas dominate the skyline.
Kathmandu, the capital city, is located in the Kathmandu Valley and serves as the country’s political, economic, and cultural center. Situated at an altitude of around 1,400 meters, Kathmandu is surrounded by lush hills, offering a relatively mild climate compared to the more arid or colder regions to the north. The city is also a hub for tourism, drawing thousands of trekkers and mountaineers who visit Nepal to explore its majestic mountains and trails.
Other important urban centers in Nepal include Pokhara, a picturesque city located near the Annapurna mountain range, which has become a key destination for adventure tourism, and Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha, which holds both religious and historical significance. Each of these cities, along with smaller towns and villages scattered across the country, plays a role in defining Nepal's social, economic, and cultural landscape.
The distribution of cities and towns across Nepal is influenced by the country’s geography. The urban centers are often located in valleys, plains, or along riverbanks where conditions are more favorable for agriculture, trade, and human settlement. Conversely, rural areas, particularly in the mountainous regions, are less densely populated but rich in natural resources, including forests, water, and minerals.
Obtaining detailed geographic data on the locations of cities, their regions, and administrative divisions is essential for understanding the spatial dynamics of Nepal. By mapping out the cities and towns, along with their respective latitude and longitude coordinates, it becomes possible to study how geography influences regional development, infrastructure planning, and the distribution of resources.
Latitude and Longitude: Mapping Nepal’s Geography
Latitude and longitude are essential tools for precisely mapping the geography of Nepal. Given the country’s diverse terrain, with vast plains, rolling hills, and towering mountains, geographic coordinates are crucial for understanding the exact location of cities, towns, and natural features. These coordinates help geographers and urban planners analyze patterns of settlement, transportation networks, and the distribution of resources across the country.
For example, the latitude and longitude of Kathmandu offer valuable information about its positioning within the Kathmandu Valley and its accessibility to surrounding mountain regions. Similarly, the coordinates of Pokhara highlight its proximity to the Annapurna Circuit, one of the world’s most popular trekking routes. The precise location of these urban centers can also help to assess how accessible they are to neighboring rural areas and how they are affected by local environmental conditions such as monsoon rainfall, floods, and landslides.
Moreover, having geographic data for each city and region allows for a more comprehensive study of the challenges that different areas face, such as urban sprawl in Kathmandu or the development of rural infrastructure in the northern mountainous regions. By analyzing this data, it becomes possible to create strategies for sustainable growth, resource management, and environmental protection that are tailored to the unique needs of each region.
Environmental Geography: The Natural Beauty of Nepal
Nepal's geography is defined not only by its human settlements but also by its rich natural environment. The Himalayan mountain range forms the northern boundary of the country and includes some of the world’s highest peaks, such as Mount Everest (8,848 meters), K2, and Lhotse. The region is known for its diverse ecosystems, ranging from alpine meadows and glaciers to temperate forests and subtropical jungles.
The southern region of Nepal, known as the Terai, is a flat and fertile area that forms the country’s agricultural heartland. This region is home to a variety of wildlife, including endangered species such as the Bengal tiger and one-horned rhinoceros, which inhabit the national parks of Chitwan and Bardia. The Terai also experiences a tropical climate, with monsoon rains that support crops like rice, wheat, and sugarcane.
The country’s midlands, including the Kathmandu Valley and Pokhara, are characterized by a temperate climate and support both agriculture and urban development. These regions are often more accessible due to their lower altitude, providing a contrast to the higher Himalayan regions, which are remote and less developed.
Understanding the exact geographic locations of these diverse ecosystems and urban areas, through latitude and longitude data, allows for better environmental management. Geographic data helps track changes in land use, monitor the impact of climate change, and develop strategies for protecting Nepal’s natural heritage, including its forests, rivers, and wildlife.
Geographic Data for Sustainable Development and Planning
For a country like Nepal, which faces significant environmental challenges due to its mountainous terrain, accurate geographic data is essential for sustainable development. As the population grows and urbanization accelerates, particularly in cities like Kathmandu, understanding the spatial distribution of resources, infrastructure, and settlements becomes crucial for managing urban growth, mitigating environmental risks, and ensuring equitable access to services.
Geographic data, such as the latitude and longitude of cities and towns, can help urban planners assess the adequacy of transportation networks, the distribution of water and energy resources, and the potential for disaster response in areas prone to flooding or landslides. By obtaining detailed data on the locations of cities and their surrounding regions, policymakers can make informed decisions about land use, resource allocation, and infrastructure development.
Additionally, geographic data is vital for promoting tourism, which is a significant contributor to Nepal’s economy. By mapping out trekking routes, tourist sites, and natural reserves, the government can create sustainable tourism models that preserve Nepal's natural beauty while providing economic opportunities for local communities.
Conclusion
Nepal's geography is as diverse as it is captivating, ranging from the towering peaks of the Himalayas to the lush plains of the Terai. Understanding how cities, regions, and administrative divisions are distributed across this varied landscape is crucial for addressing the country’s development challenges. By obtaining detailed geographic data, including the latitude and longitude of cities and towns, researchers, urban planners, and policymakers can gain valuable insights into how geography influences Nepal's economy, infrastructure, and natural resources. This data is essential for planning a sustainable and resilient future for Nepal, ensuring that its growth is balanced with environmental conservation and equitable development.
