Last update : 10 December 2024.
This is the best list of 12421 cities in the Belgium available in 4 formats ( CSV, Json, SQL, XML ). We have cleaned up the Geoname database to leave only the towns, capitals and villages. All are all associated with regions and sub-regions (where available).
Each file contains the following data: Geoname_ID, City, Alternate_Name, Country_Code, Region, Sub_region, Latitude, Longitude, Elevation, Population, Timezone, Fcode_Name. See the FAQ below for a detailed explanation.
Here is an example of the data from the Belgium file that you are going to retrieve. The data is displayed here in the form of a table:

Exploring Belgium: A Geographical Insight and Data Resource
Belgium’s Unique Geographical Position in Europe
Belgium, located in Western Europe, is a small but geographically significant country known for its rich history, complex political landscape, and diverse culture. Covering an area of approximately 30,688 square kilometers, Belgium is bordered by France, Germany, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, positioning it as a key player in European geopolitics and commerce. Its strategic location has shaped both its development and its role in the European Union.
The country’s topography is characterized by a mix of flat plains, rolling hills, and mountainous regions. The northern part of Belgium is predominantly flat, with expansive agricultural lands and urban centers. The southern part of the country, part of the Ardennes mountain range, is marked by forested hills and valleys, providing a sharp contrast to the industrialized north. Belgium’s major rivers, such as the Meuse, Scheldt, and the Rhine, have historically played a significant role in trade, transport, and settlement patterns, further influencing the distribution of cities and towns.
Belgium’s varied geography—ranging from fertile plains to rugged highlands—affects everything from regional economic activities to urbanization and infrastructure development. Understanding how these geographic features intersect with the country’s cities, regions, and departments is essential for both historical analysis and modern-day planning. My geographic database of Belgium offers a comprehensive look at the country’s cities, their regions, and their administrative divisions, with detailed latitude and longitude coordinates to help map the country’s geography.
Belgium’s Regions and Administrative Divisions
Belgium is divided into three distinct regions: Flanders, Wallonia, and Brussels. These regions are further subdivided into provinces and municipalities, creating a multi-tiered system of governance that reflects the country’s linguistic and cultural diversity. Flanders in the north is primarily Dutch-speaking, Wallonia in the south is French-speaking, and Brussels, the capital, is officially bilingual, though French is predominantly spoken.
Flanders is known for its flat landscapes, with its fertile farmland, numerous canals, and densely populated urban centers such as Antwerp and Ghent. The region has historically been the economic powerhouse of Belgium, with a focus on industry, trade, and high-tech sectors. Wallonia, in contrast, is more mountainous and less industrialized, with the Ardennes offering a natural barrier between France and the rest of Belgium. Cities like Liège and Charleroi have been important industrial hubs, particularly during the 19th and 20th centuries.
Brussels, as both a region and the capital city, plays a central role in the governance and economy of Belgium. The city itself is home to numerous international institutions, including the European Union and NATO, making it a hub of global diplomacy and commerce. As the largest metropolitan area in Belgium, Brussels is a focal point for urban development, infrastructure, and multiculturalism.
The geographic database I have developed allows users to explore the regions and subdivisions of Belgium in detail, including the latitude and longitude of every major city and municipality. This resource provides valuable insights into the country’s urban distribution, infrastructure, and regional economic focus.
Mapping Belgium’s Urban Landscape with Latitude and Longitude
Latitude and longitude coordinates are crucial for understanding the precise location of cities and regions within Belgium. The northern region of Flanders, for example, is densely populated with cities like Antwerp and Ghent, while the southern region of Wallonia is more rural, with larger expanses of natural landscape and smaller towns. These geographic positions play a role in the economic and cultural activities of each area, influencing factors like transportation networks, industry, and resource distribution.
For example, the city of Antwerp, located along the Scheldt River, benefits from its strategic position as a major port in Europe. The exact latitude and longitude of Antwerp reveal how its access to the sea has contributed to its role as an international trade center. Similarly, the city of Liège, situated near the Meuse River, has developed as a key industrial hub due to its location at the crossroads of major European trade routes.
By using the latitude and longitude data provided in the geographic database, users can gain insights into how Belgium’s cities are distributed, how they interact with their surrounding environments, and how geographic factors such as proximity to rivers, transportation routes, and natural resources have shaped their development. This data is invaluable for urban planning, resource management, and infrastructure development across the country.
The Role of Geographic Data in Belgium’s Future Development
Belgium’s diverse geography presents both opportunities and challenges for future growth and development. From managing the growth of major urban centers like Brussels and Antwerp to addressing the needs of its more rural and mountainous regions, geographic data plays a critical role in shaping the country’s development strategy.
The country’s flat terrain in the north has allowed for the rapid development of transportation networks, while the Ardennes mountain range in the south has posed challenges for infrastructure development. Understanding how cities and regions are positioned in relation to these natural features is essential for developing sustainable development policies, improving infrastructure, and ensuring that economic growth is balanced across regions.
The geographic database I’ve developed offers precise latitude and longitude data for each city, province, and region in Belgium, enabling a more detailed analysis of how the country’s urban and rural areas are distributed. This information can help policymakers make data-driven decisions about where to invest in infrastructure, allocate resources, and plan for future growth in a way that respects the country’s geographic limitations and strengths.
Regional Characteristics and Economic Focus in Belgium
The geographic distribution of cities and towns across Belgium is closely tied to the economic focus of each region. Flanders, for example, is an industrial and technological powerhouse, with major cities like Antwerp and Ghent focusing on trade, high-tech industries, and services. Wallonia, which was once the center of coal and steel production in Europe, is undergoing a process of industrial diversification and modern development, focusing on sectors such as biotechnology and renewable energy.
Brussels, as the political and economic center of Belgium, is home to a thriving service sector, with numerous international institutions and businesses calling the city home. As the seat of the European Union, Brussels also has a unique position within Europe, contributing to its role in international diplomacy, trade, and policymaking.
Through my geographic database, users can access the specific geographic data of each region and city, including its latitude and longitude coordinates. This data allows for an understanding of how different parts of Belgium have specialized in various sectors based on their geography and historical context, and it can help in forecasting future trends in economic and urban development.
Conclusion: Unlocking Belgium’s Potential with Geographic Data
Belgium’s geography, from its rivers and plains to its urban centers and industrial regions, is integral to its economic and cultural identity. By using the geographic database I have developed, which includes detailed latitude and longitude data for each city, region, and department, users can explore how the physical landscape of Belgium influences its urbanization, economic activities, and infrastructure. This resource is a vital tool for policymakers, urban planners, and researchers who need to make informed decisions about the country’s growth and development. With accurate geographic data, Belgium can continue to thrive as a center of commerce, culture, and innovation in Europe.
