Last update : 15 January 2025.
This is the best list of 3998 cities in the Gambia available in 4 formats ( CSV, Json, SQL, XML ). We have cleaned up the Geoname database to leave only the towns, capitals and villages. All are all associated with regions and sub-regions (where available).
Each file contains the following data: Geoname_ID, City, Alternate_Name, Country_Code, Region, Sub_region, Latitude, Longitude, Elevation, Population, Timezone, Fcode_Name. See the FAQ below for a detailed explanation.
Here is an example of the data from the Gambia file that you are going to retrieve. The data is displayed here in the form of a table:

The Gambia: A Geographical Overview of a Unique African Nation
A Narrow Country with a Rich Landscape
The Gambia, Africa’s smallest mainland country, is a geographical marvel with its unique shape and location. It stretches along the Gambia River, a major waterway that flows from the eastern Senegalese highlands through the heart of the country to the Atlantic Ocean. Enclosed by Senegal on all sides except for the Atlantic coastline, The Gambia’s territorial layout resembles a long, narrow strip of land. This unusual geographic formation has deeply influenced the country’s cultural and economic development, with the river serving as both a physical and symbolic lifeline for the nation.
Geographically, The Gambia is defined by its river, which flows from east to west, with lush floodplains, tropical savannahs, and mangrove swamps along its banks. These ecosystems foster a vibrant diversity of wildlife, including numerous bird species and aquatic life. The climate is tropical, characterized by a dry season and a rainy season, and the country’s vegetation includes both forested areas and open woodlands. The Gambia’s riverside landscape offers a rich resource base that supports both agriculture and fishing, which are fundamental to the country’s economy.
The Gambia’s Regional Divisions: Understanding the Structure
While The Gambia is small in terms of land area, its administrative and political divisions are essential for understanding how its local governance functions. The country is divided into five administrative regions: Banjul, the capital city, and the Western, Central, Upper River, and Lower River Divisions. Each region has distinct geographical features, cultural significance, and local governance structures. These divisions reflect the diverse ways in which the population interacts with the land and the environment.
Banjul, as the capital, serves as the administrative and economic center of The Gambia, with significant urban infrastructure and a coastal location that makes it a key point of trade and commerce. The Western and Central regions, encompassing the country’s urban and agricultural heartlands, are where much of the country’s population resides. Meanwhile, the Upper River and Lower River Divisions, further from the coast, offer more rural settings with smaller towns and villages that depend on subsistence agriculture and local industries.
Understanding these divisions is crucial for geographers, as each region’s geography plays a role in the distribution of population, economic activities, and social dynamics.
The Importance of City Data in The Gambia’s Geography
Despite its small size, The Gambia has a variety of urban and rural areas, each contributing to the country’s geographic identity. Cities like Banjul, Serrekunda, and Brikama are hubs of commerce and governance, but smaller towns and villages scattered along the Gambia River also contribute to the country’s cultural and economic richness. The development of these cities has been shaped by the river’s flow and the resources available in each region.
For geographers and urban planners, detailed data on the cities and towns of The Gambia is essential for understanding spatial relationships, infrastructure, and population distribution. With a comprehensive database of city locations, including their regions and administrative divisions, one can begin to analyze patterns of urbanization and economic development across the country. Furthermore, the geographical coordinates of each city—latitude and longitude—help to map the relationship between these urban spaces and their surrounding environments.
Latitude and Longitude: Tools for Mapping The Gambia’s Cities
Precise latitude and longitude data are essential for a more thorough geographical analysis of The Gambia. These coordinates not only help map the cities and towns on a global scale but also provide valuable insights into the country’s geographical and environmental context. Understanding the exact placement of cities along the river and across different regions enables researchers to identify patterns in settlement, land use, and resource distribution.
For example, the positioning of Banjul on the Atlantic coast gives it access to important shipping routes, while cities like Serrekunda, which are located inland, serve as regional trade centers. Knowing the exact coordinates of each city helps geographers understand how these urban areas function in relation to one another, and how the Gambia River, as a central feature of the country’s geography, shapes the development of these cities.
In addition, this data is essential for environmental studies. By mapping the locations of cities with their respective geographical coordinates, researchers can assess the effects of climate change, urban expansion, and deforestation on specific regions of The Gambia.
Unlocking the Potential of Regional and City Data
Geographical data on The Gambia’s cities, regions, and departments offers immense potential for urban planning, resource management, and development strategies. By obtaining comprehensive data on each city’s location, administrative division, and environmental context, one can better plan for infrastructure, sustainability, and regional development.
For example, knowing the precise latitude and longitude of Banjul, Serrekunda, or Brikama helps in the development of transportation systems, access to healthcare, and the allocation of resources for public services. This data also aids in planning for the impacts of climate change, such as the rising sea levels affecting coastal cities, or the environmental pressures in more rural regions where agriculture is the primary source of livelihood.
Furthermore, obtaining this data allows researchers and policymakers to track population trends, urban sprawl, and economic growth across The Gambia, contributing to more informed decision-making processes.
Geographic Data as a Tool for Sustainable Development
As The Gambia continues to grow and develop, sustainable urban planning and resource management will be essential to maintaining the country’s delicate ecological balance. The integration of city-specific data, such as latitude, longitude, and regional classifications, is key to guiding this process.
For instance, understanding the geographical layout of the regions along the Gambia River and their relationship to the landlocked areas further inland can aid in the creation of more sustainable farming practices, water management systems, and infrastructure projects. The river itself plays a crucial role in the agricultural and economic activities of the country, and mapping out cities and towns in relation to this waterway offers valuable insights into how best to manage this vital resource.
Additionally, as The Gambia faces challenges related to climate change and rising sea levels, access to accurate geographical data can support strategies for disaster risk reduction and the protection of vulnerable urban and rural areas.
Data-Driven Insights for The Gambia’s Future
The availability of detailed city and regional data in The Gambia, including geographic coordinates, offers a pathway for more effective planning, development, and environmental management. As the country continues to develop its infrastructure and economy, having access to accurate and up-to-date data on the cities, regions, and departments is crucial for informed decision-making.
This data can help both local and national governments plan for a sustainable future while protecting the country’s unique geographical and environmental characteristics. By leveraging geographic data, The Gambia can continue to evolve in a way that balances urban growth with environmental preservation, ensuring a prosperous and sustainable future for all its citizens.
